About Rose Cologne:
A strong advocate of the effectiveness of volunteer organizations, Dr. Rose Cologne was a legend in her own time. She was the first volunteer ever honored by the Centre County Council for Human Services. The dinner was held at the Penns Valley High School Cafeteria in 1971, and she was the only person honored. Known throughout Pennsylvania and beyond for her years of pioneering leadership in adult education and her work to alleviate problems of the poor, Dr. Cologne also served with international programs in Japan and Afghanistan. Rose, as she was affectionately known, was a faculty member at Penn State in the Sociology Dept. from 1941 until 1968. She was one of the founding members of Tri-County Habitat for Humanity, which honors her with a scholarship for Habitat families to further their educations. She also was instrumental in starting the Centre County Branch of the PA Prison Society, and was a regular prison visitor for many years. She received the Benjamin Rush award, presented annually by the Centre County Medical Society for outstanding contributions toward the promotion of public health and welfare in Centre County. Rose was a mentor and role model for many people in the human services field. Her great energy, sense of humor, and love of all people regardless of the mistakes they may have made, endeared her to all who knew her.
Ann Graybill Cook Volunteer of Distinction Award
This award, presented at the Rose Cologne Volunteer Dinner, honors the memory of the late Ann Cook. Ann is known to many as the impetus behind the Voluntary Action Center (VAC) with offices in both State College and
Philipsburg. Ann’s idea of a Directory of people who wanted to volunteer, connected to agencies and organizations that needed volunteers was unique and very much appreciated by both entities.
VAC later became the Volunteer Center and now is the Help Center, which combines the tasks of matching volunteers and needs to many other services in Centre County.
The award is given to a person who has contributed as a volunteer to the Council for Human Services. The range of services could include development of special projects, special initiatives, many years of service,
work on multiple committees, or service to the board.
