Summertime at Schlow Centre Region Library means one thing — Summer Reading! Actually, that’s not entirely true.
While it’s a fact that the Summer Reading Program is a major activity at Schlow each year — and it’s a venture that has major benefits by helping to prevent what’s known as the “summer slide” for children and teens while also having adults participate and keep their minds active — it’s isn’t the only activity at Schlow this summer that is both entertaining and beneficial.
Here are just a few events at Schlow that can add to your summer fun:
Free Summer Lunches. Schlow is once again a host site for free summer lunches that are done through the Healthy Bodies Project at Penn State. Each Tuesday in Schlow’s Community Room, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., meals will be provided on a first-come, first-serve basis for children ages 0 to 18. Parents and guardians can purchase a lunch for $2. The goal for the program is to fill the hunger gap and allow kids and teens to have access to good, nutritious food all summer.
Planetarium Visits. With this year’s Summer Reading theme of “A Universe of Stories,” and 2019 also being the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, it’s a good time to learn about constellations and our galaxy. Schlow has organized visits to the Penn State Planetarium in Davey Laboratory. The visits are 5 and 5:45 p.m. June 25 and 10 and 10:45 a.m. July 19. Thirty seats are available for each show on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Help with Job Searches. If this summer is one where you’re looking to change careers or for a new job, Pennsylvania CareerLink’s mobile unit, The Link, can help. Once a month, The Link parks outside of Schlow, on Allen Street, and anyone is welcome to come in and receive career guidance, assistance with searching and applying for jobs, resume and cover letter review, and more. This summer, The Link will be at Schlow 10 a.m. to 2 pm. June 25, July 23, and August 27.
Creating a Better World. On July 17, Ten Thousand Villages will visit Schlow to talk with children and families about how fair trade creates a more just and sustainable world. The Fair Trade for Kids program begins at 2:30 p.m. in the Community Room.
Everything is Free! Finally, no matter if you’re looking for something educational or just to be entertained, whether through books, games, toys, movies, WiFi, and more, Schlow offers it all for free.
